TOUCH OF THE WEST

Nestled at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains along the western plains of Wyoming. Mountain Meadow Wool is a family-operated mill dedicated to supporting local ranchers and raising awareness about ranching culture across the American West.

Our Beginning

Mountain Meadow is a spinning mill set below the Big Horn Mountains on the Western Plains of Wyoming. It is a family operated mill, owned by Karen Hostetler and her son, Ben , and dedicated to supporting local ranchers and raising awareness about ranching culture in the American West. Mountain Meadow is committed to revitalizing the American wool industry through eco-friendly operations and fair prices for ranchers.

Over 100 years ago Basque sheepherders arrived from Spain and France to settle in the Great Plains of the West. Wyoming was one of the central locations where small ranches started in the late 1800’s. Unfortunately, in the last 20 years a decrease in wool prices has forced many of these historic ranches to shut down.

Concerned with the loss of this way of life, in 2002, Karen Hostetler and her business partner embarked on a journey to preserve and sustain the ranches of the Great American West. In 2007, Mountain Meadow Wool Mill opened their doors as a full service mill that offered premium prices for wool from local ranches.

Our Yarn, Home Decor, and Apparel

The clean, cool, and dry climate in Wyoming creates naturally fine, soft, and silky mountain merino wool. This mountain merino wool is below 22 microns and comes from Rambouillet, Cormo, Targhee, Merino and Columbia breeds. To maintain the beauty of the natural fiber, Mountain Meadow uses environmentally friendly cleaners and vegetable based spinning oil. Eco-friendly manufacturing practices help the wool retain its natural lanolin, resulting in luxurious yarns that have a soft and natural connection to the land. Each premium skein of yarn can also be traced back to our local ranch supplier, giving consumers a direct connection to the West. We are currently working with our ranching families for environmental, agricultural, sustainability, and economic opportunity.

Mountain Meadow Wool is committed to building a company with respect for nature, ethics, and sustainability. We continue to explore new and exciting innovations in wool fiber.

CURRENT OPERATIONS

Today Mountain Meadow Wool Mill is the largest full service mill in the West (raw wool enters one side of the facility and finished yarn, apparel, and other products exit the other side). We offer custom processing, custom blending and spinning, as well as 23 different types of yarns that can be hand-dyed in custom colors. We are 100% natural, using bio-degradable soaps and non-petroleum spinning oil and we also recycle 50% of the water we use through the scouring process. Mountain Meadow currently processes over 60,000 lbs of wool a year. We are selling in 42 states and 3 countries overseas and are always looking for more opportunities to expand.
