Owens Land and Livestock
Mary Owens is a 5th generation sheep rancher. She loves history and in particular the Johnson County Cattle War. This was a historic battle between the sheep men and cattle barons in the early 1900’s. Cattlemen dominated the Big Horn Basin and for many years set up boundaries where sheep were forbidden to graze. During this conflict Mary’s great uncle Joe Allemand, a French sheepman, had his sheep camp raided by seven masked cattlemen. In a classic western drama; fires were started both men and sheep were killed.
She and Bill have had their own ranch since 1986. Their children are grown and in college but come home to work the ranch. They raise targhee/rambouillet sheep and have some lovely natural grays and blacks. Owens Land and Livestock lamb meets the natural standards for lamb in the Mountain States Lamb Coop.
